Amal El-Ghazaly joined Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell University as an assistant professor in July 2019. Prior to joining Cornell, she was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of California Berkeley, where she was awarded the University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2017. Her postdoctoral research explored new possibilities for ultrafast all-electrical switching of magnetic nanodots for faster and more energy-efficient computer memories. She earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University, where she was funded by both NSF and NDSEG graduate research fellowships as well as the Stanford DARE fellowship until her graduation in 2016. Her Ph.D. research focused on radio frequency devices using magnetic and magnetoelectric thin-film composites for tunable wireless communications. She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2011.

In the summer of 2015, while completing her Ph.D., she interned with the Components Research department at Intel in Hillsboro, OR. She has also studied and interned abroad in Japan, Egypt, and Nigeria over the course of her undergraduate and graduate degrees. Throughout her career, she has devoted much of her spare time to numerous diversity initiatives in STEM. She is deeply passionate about empowering minorities through higher education and stimulating technology development and science and engineering education across the world.

Ph.D. Students

Htoo Htet Htoo Wai Htet
Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
He received his undergraduate degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Union College, NY, where his research focused on photonic crystals for ultrasound microscopy. He was then awarded a 1-year Watson Fellowship to explore maker culture in developing countries, and subsequently worked on bridging science education and developing technology to empower Myanmar citizens. In his leisure time, he enjoys practicing the piano or participating in group outdoor activities and adventures.
Smaran Smaran Panth Kulakarni
Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
He received his B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH). He is interested in developing sustainable and self-powered sensing systems to understand complex phenomena around us. He enjoys movies, cricket, sketching, cooking and practicing music (vocals & flute) during his leisure time.
Haosen Yin Haosen Yin
Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
He completed his undergraduate degree at Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), as an honors graduate. His current research interest lies in nanofabrication and assembly of magnetic nanoparticles, as well as their application in communications. In his free time, he enjoys a variety of arts, including piano, painting, video editing (vfx), and culinary arts.

Undergraduate Students

David Bertuch David Bertuch
B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
He is currently a senior undergraduate in ECE with a focus on electromagnetism. His research involves the integration of magnetic materials into RF devices to achieve versatile and tunable operation. Outside of academics, he enjoys reading about current events and exploring new cuisines.
Javier Chambilla Javier Chambilla
B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
He is currently a junior majoring in ECE with a strong interest in analog and RFIC circuit design. His current research interests include ways to improve power efficiency and cost in analog circuits—all while trying to minimize the size and complexity of the overall circuit. During his free time, he enjoys practicing classical guitar and playing soccer with friends.
Marie Curie Rachael Godwin
B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Einstein Bruce Jagid
B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Marie Curie Julia Nwokedi
B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
